Spotify began working on showing a song's full lyrics in real time in November of last year after years of displaying lyrics' annotations and background information only ( a feature called 'Behind the Lyrics'), courtesy of a partnership with Genius. The song lyrics are provided by Musixmatch and show up right below the playback controls, a place previously occupied by Spotify's 'Behind the Lyrics' content. In addition to mobile devices, the full lyrics are also reportedly available on desktop.

Spotify’s partnership with Musixmatch ended a few years ago.However, the Musixmatch app, available on all devices, will still detect your Spotify music and display its lyrics. Unfortunately, for now, not all songs display their lyrics. Tracks that support that feature should show the 'Lyrics' indicator before an artist's name in playlists. There's currently no official word from Spotify on when this feature will be hitting all users as not everyone appears to have this experience at the moment.

I haven’t found any good Spotify lyrics plugin for Mac OSX yet so I decided to code my own approach. It is not exactly a plugin but a web-based bookmarklet. There’s no installation required and works on any platform (Windows, Mac OSX, Linux and even your smartphone).
How ListeningNow works
Click on the bookmarklet in your browser and a popup window with the lyrics to the song you are currently listening (or just listened) in Spotify will appear.

Setting up ListeningNow
Although no software needs to be installed, you need to follow this steps in order to make ListeningNow work with Spotify.
You need to have a Spotify account and a Last.fm account.
- Enable scrobbling in Spotify
- Make sure Recently listened tracks in Last.fm is set to Public
- Go to your user profile
- Click on Settings at the right of the Recently Listened Tracks header
- Deselect Make this private
- Select one of the following available ListeningNow servers:
- Type in your Last.fm username:
- Click here:
- Drag and drop the bookmarklet to your browser toolbar:
(generate the bookmarklet first) - Click on the bookmarklet any time you want to see the lyrics for a song
